Many know it. Again, many do not know. It is also hilsa, but the name is Manipuri hilsa. It looks like a native putti fish. However, the size is much larger than that of putty. Absolutely like thread in flavor. Meanwhile, Manipuri Hilsa or Pengba fish farming has been started in various East Burdwan blocks in West Bengal, including Mangalkot, Bhatar, Memari 2, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries. Fishing experts are hopeful that Pengba can win everyone’s hearts instead of Hilsa.
The common name of the Pengba fish is Manipuri Hilsa. This fish is found in Manipur. This fish is very loved by the people of Manipur. There is a demand for this fish for its incomparable flavor. Scientists from the Central Institute of Freshwater Aquatic Culture or Cipher Fisheries in Orissa have managed to artificially breed this endangered fish species. Farming was started in the Mangalkot block of East Burdwan district by bringing in Pengba fish saplings in collaboration with the Agricultural Information Advisory Center (Atma) and the Department of Fisheries.
It is mainly found in rivers, lakes, ponds in the Chinduin region of Myanmar and in Manipur, in China’s Yuan Province. Nowadays, in other areas, emphasis has been placed on growing Pengba in conjunction with the environment. Experts say that even if the fish is in the temperate zone, it is possible to grow it at higher temperatures.
As a food for this fish, the rice husk and the almond husk powder should be mixed in equal proportions. Lime should be applied to the pond regularly.
News of the cultivation of Manipuri hilsa in Maheshpur from Jhenaidah in Bangladesh has caused a stir. Maheshpur fish farmers were the first to cultivate this Manipuri Hilsa. In three villages in Bashbaria and Pantapara Union of the upazila, 12 lakh fingerlings were released into around 50 ponds. If these freshwater fish are imported into the market, the demand for hilsa will be met and farmers will also benefit.
