Hundreds of people have attacked, vandalized and looted the Hindu-dominated village of Noagaon in Sunamganj’s Shalla upazila. Hundreds of followers of Hefazat-e-Islam leader Mamunul Haque attacked the village on Wednesday morning after a man posted a status on Facebook. The attackers destroyed and looted at least six houses and between seven and eight family temples.

Visiting the village around 12:30 pm yesterday, the bed in Jhumna Das Apan’s house, which was given status on Facebook, was found to be random. There are kitchen utensils lying on the floor. There’s nobody at the house. People in the next room said Jhumon Das’s wife was injured while fleeing during the attack. He went to Upazila Sadar for treatment. The villagers panicked.

Signs of attack were also seen at Rabindra Das’ house and some other rough houses. Inside the house, several pieces of furniture were broken, including chairs, steel cabinets, display cabinets. The home of Union Parishad president Vivekananda Das Bakul was also vandalized. Upon receiving the news, a team of police officers from Shalla and Dirai arrived at the scene and controlled the situation.

Speaking with the villagers, it was learned that the attackers crossed the Darain River with sticks, da, ramda, kirich and other types of domestic weapons and began to march towards the village of Noagaon. Seeing the matter, the men and women of the town abandoned their homes and fled outside. Many people close their houses and sit inside.

Hundreds of people led by independent members of the village of Nachni and Fakkan attacked the homes of seven freedom fighters, including Anil Chandra Das, Kajal Chandra Das, Sunu Ranjan Das and Anil Kanti Das. The freedom fighter Anil Chandra broke down the doors and windows of his house and looted everything.

They then attacked and looted 6 houses in the village one by one. The village family destroyed the temple and took a stone pearl from one of them. The attackers looted money, money, gold and other valuables from all the houses.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Jahangir Hossain and Police Superintendent Mizanur Rahman visited the scene around 1 pm yesterday. The next day, Tuesday night, they met at the local market in Daraine. Shalla police arrested Jhumon from the Shaskai village of upazila overnight. After Jhumon was arrested, the meeting took place in the villages of Dillai Upazila, Chandipur, Dhanpur, Shamarchar, Kashipur, Anandapur and Sultanpur. Hefazat-e-Islam’s vice president of Dirai Upazila, Maulana Nur Uddin, said: “We do not know who is involved in the attack.”
