Tensions in Beanibazar Upazila of Sylhet have risen over the arrival in Sylhet of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh Deputy General Secretary Muhammad Mamunul Haque, who threatened to remove the sculpture of the nation’s father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The controversial Hifazat leader will be present as the main guest at the 71st annual Jamia Deenia Asadul Uloom Ramdha Madrasa Jalsa on December 25, madrasa authorities said.

After delivering a speech in offensive language about the construction of the Bangabandhu sculpture, a case of sedition of an organization called Bangladesh Muktiyuddha Mancha was brought against Mamunul Haque.

He is also accused of inciting the late Amir Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi of Hefazat-e-Islam last September to incite students to protest at the Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Uloom Muinul Islam Madrasa and force him to resign as general secretary.

Ahmed Shafi’s brother-in-law, Mohammad Mohiuddin, brought a case in a Chittagong court against 38 people, including Mamunul Haque, for killing the former emir of Hefazat-e-Islam on December 16.

The court ordered the Police Investigation Office (PBI) to investigate both incidents.

The Sura Amela members of the madrasa sat down in a meeting last Saturday to discuss the general issue. Although there was a proposal to remove Mamunul Haque due to his recent activities, the madrassa authorities decided to bring him back.

Alinagar Union Awami League general secretary Moniruzzaman Monir told The Daily Star: ‘I am a member of the madrasa Sura Amela, but I was not present at the last meeting. We discussed the issue of bringing Mamunul Haque to the mahfil madrasa at a party meeting, where we agreed not to bring this ethically criticized leader to the area.

He said: “The madrassa authorities have already held talks with the local MP and former education minister Nurul Islam Nahid. The deputy said that if the administration approves it, Mamunul Haque will have no objections to come. Now, if the administration gives permission, we will have nothing to say.

Meanwhile, Mamunul Haque said it would come subject to permission from the administration during the latest talks with the madrasa authorities.

Muhtamim Yusuf Khadimani from the madrassa told The Daily Star: I have spoken to him (Mamunul Haque) about this, he has told the interior minister that he will come only if he gets official permission from the local administration.

He said: ‘We will go to the administration to ask for permission after discussing with the local leaders of the Awami League. If permission is given, Maulana Mamunul will not come.

Earlier, the Bangladesh Mujahideen Committee organized a mahfil at the Alia Madrasa field in Sylhet from 10-12 December. So Charmonai Pir Syed. Rezaul Karim was supposed to be present as the main guest.

However, on December 6, activists from the Chhatra League set fire to a mahfil banner and protested against Charmonai Pir’s anti-sculpture Bangabandhu speech. That same day, the administration canceled the permit for the meeting.

Mamunur Rashid Mamun, President of Alinagar Union Parishad The daily starWho said: ‘If the madrassa authorities invite the mahfil, we can know the matter. There is a surah meeting at the majlis madrasa next Monday, where we will discuss the matter so that the public order situation in the area does not deteriorate under any circumstances.

Beanibazar Upazila Nirbahi, Officer Mausumi Mahbub in this regard The daily starWho said: ‘They haven’t officially informed us yet. However, talks have been held with union presidents and local political leaders. They said they were looking to prevent Mamunul Haque from attending the mahfil madrasa. And if Mamunul Haque comes without permission, we will legally resist him.
