Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid said Maldives will hire Bangladeshi workers by building a solid structure on the basis of the agreement. He also reiterated his support for Bangladesh on the Rohingya refugee issue.

The Maldivian Foreign Minister made the remarks at a joint press conference after bilateral talks at the Padma state guesthouse in the capital on Tuesday.

Abdullah Shahid said: ‘Today we are signing two memoranda. There is a memorandum of understanding between the two countries on the recruitment of labor by establishing a solid framework for the recruitment of Bangladeshi labor. He said the second memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Maldives Foreign Service Institute and the Bangladesh Foreign Service Academy to cooperate in training foreign service officers from the two countries.

Abdullah Shahid said the Maldives insisted on regularizing undocumented workers to guarantee the basic rights of Bangladeshi workers.

Currently, some 60,000 Bangladeshis work in the Maldives.

Regarding the Rohingya crisis, the Maldivian Foreign Minister said: “The Maldives has always been in favor of the rights of the Rohingya people and has demanded a genocide trial against the Rohingya people in collaboration with the Gambian government” .

Foreign Minister Abdul Momen said Maldives President Ibrahim Mohammad Salih will visit Bangladesh in March to mark the Golden Jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence and the year of Mujib.

The meeting discussed a wide range of topics including business and commercial expansion, connectivity, especially shipping, and climate issues, he said, adding that they also discussed national, regional and international issues. The Maldivian Foreign Minister arrived in Bangladesh on Monday on an official visit at the invitation of Abdul Momen.
