For the first time in the country, a privately separate madrasa has been introduced for the hijra (third gender) community. There they can study for free. The third-gender madrasa called Dawatul Quran in the Kamrangirchar Chhata Mosque Road area of Dhaka was officially opened on Friday (November 8). Starting on Saturday (November 7), third-sex students will be admitted there.
This madrasa is known to have been started at the initiative of the late Ahmed Ferdous Bari Chowdhury Foundation. There is no cost for hijras to study at this madrasa. The madrasa will run in 2020 according to the government-recognized Qawmi study program. Initially, the tour of this non-resident madrasa has started with 10 teachers.
Hafeez Maulana Mufti Mohammad Abdur Rahman Azad, the founding director of the madrasa, told the Bengali Tribune: “Once the admission starts from Saturday, I will be able to say how many students will be admitted.” There is no cost for students to study here. For now, the madrasa will not be residential.
He said: ‘The work of this madrasa has already begun. At that time I taught about one hundred and a half hijras in different places in Kamrangirchar. They will also study here.
The madrasa will be run with 10 teachers, Abdur Rahman said. Among them are many teachers who are proficient in Bengali, English and technical.
Mohammad Abdul Aziz Hussaini, the madrasa’s secretary for education and training, told the Bengali Tribune: “Hijras are neglected and disadvantaged in society. They cannot receive an education. For this reason, they are rebellious in society. But God created them. No mother’s son. It is our responsibility to teach them the ideal. To make them ideal, we must first learn the Quran. So take the initiative of this madrasa. So our idea is to turn them into human resources with technical education.
In mentioning that the Quran will be taught to third-sex students in the madrasa at the beginning, Abdul Aziz said: In fact, I will lead this madrasa according to the (certificate) curriculum approved by the government last year.
He said that madrasa teachers are paid Tk 10,000 at the primary level, while those at the upper level are paid Tk 30,000. The late Ahmed Ferdous Bari Chowdhury Foundation is paying for the management of the madrasa together with the teachers.
Abida Sultana Mitu, President of Hijra Welfare Foundation, said at the opening ceremony of the Dawatul Quran Third Gender Madrasa located in 56th Ward of Dhaka South City, “This is the first educational institution for third gender people in the country. If the hijras are given the opportunity to meet their basic needs, they will not disturb anyone on the streets. They also want to live like ordinary people. I thank the entrepreneurs of the madrasa for this.
Saidul Madbar, 57th district councilor, said: “I will try to do something for this madrasa, which was established for the third sex, by speaking with the mayor of the city, lawyer Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.” We will also try to arrange your employment.
The hijra community is happy to receive an official education. They say that despite recognition from the government, they do not have access to education in conventional educational institutions. They want to study and get jobs in the public and private sector.
At the madrasa’s opening ceremony, student Rani Hijra spoke. He told the Bengali Tribune: ‘We don’t have an education system. Although the government recognized it, it did not make any such provision for education. Educational institutions do not accept admission. I have people too. Like ordinary people, we have the right to education.
He further said, ‘We have more than 50 hijras in Jatrabari. Everybody is Muslim. The teachers here used to go to our residence in Jatrabari and recite the Quran. We also want to learn the Quran and become a Maulana. I don’t want to go out and raise money. I want to earn a living working. ‘
