The Vice Chancellor of Rajshahi University (UK), M Abdus Sobhan, has been accused of naming a university-funded madrassa.
The Hafezia Madrasa, built on the second floor of Jame Masjid, the university’s cemetery, has been named ‘Sobhania Al-Quranul Kareem Hifzkhana’, as confirmed by the Vice Chancellor, a member of the Madrasa Naming Committee. It has also been reported that the Vice Chancellor himself has given his consent for this appointment.
According to university sources, the Jame Mosque, the cemetery of Rajshahi University, was rebuilt at a cost of around 2 million Tk rupees. The mosque was inaugurated on May 8 this year by UK Vice Chancellor Abdus Sobhan.
The madrasa was recently inaugurated on the second floor of the mosque. An identification plate has also been affixed there.
Hafez Ali Hossain, imam of the university’s Paschimpara Jame Mosque, who is in charge of naming the madrasa, said the shrine was opened during the time of Vice Chancellor M Abdus Sobhan, hence its name. Also, Sobhan means holy, there is a similarity to Sir’s name. We will also pray, remember that he did. ‘
Hafez Ali further said that after consulting with the imam of the university’s central mosque and telling the rector the name, the rector gave permission to keep the name.
No approval was sought from the University Union regarding the name of the madrasa. Only the verbal approval of the university rector was taken, he added.
Sultanul Islam Tipu, a professor in the Department of Geology and Mining, said: “Of course, it is wrong to open a madrasa at the university and name it VC.” Because it makes decisions by various committees to appoint someone on college property, the approval of the Academic Council and the Union is required.
The mobile phone of the Vice Chancellor of M Abdus Sobhan University was called more than once but he did not receive it.
