The United States will sell £ 1 billion worth of weapons to Morocco shortly after normalization of relations with Israel. The Trump administration has already sent a notice to Congress.
Reuters cited an unidentified source on Friday. According to sources, the United States will provide Morocco with four remote-controlled drones and ammunition.
On Thursday, Reuters reported on the arms sale for the first time since US President Donald Trump praised the Morocco-Israel deal.
The influential US media Bloomberg later published the same information. According to them, the United States has committed to providing Morocco with four drones and laser-controlled ammunition.
The US administration must obtain permission from Congress before selling arms to any country. Congress has the power to reevaluate the issue and stop gun sales. However, this is not expected to happen in the case of Morocco.
The recent agreement negotiated by the United Arab Emirates with Israel on the development of relations in the United Arab Emirates also provided for the sale of such weapons. Under the deal, the United States will sell £ 23 billion worth of sophisticated weapons and ammunition to the Middle Eastern country.
However, international human rights groups have protested, claiming that large quantities of weapons could reach civilians in the war-torn United Arab Emirates. Some senators also demanded the cancellation of the agreement. However, the Senate vote this week missed an attempt to cancel the arms sale to the United Arab Emirates.
Last Thursday, Morocco agreed to normalize relations with Israel in a tantalizing proposal from US President Donald Trump. The King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, accepted the offer after receiving a phone call from Trump.
Under the agreement, the United States will recognize Morocco’s claim to sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara region. Morocco has been at odds with freedom fighters in the region for decades. The Algerian-backed Political Front is trying to break away from Moroccan influence and build a separate state there.
As the fourth country in the Arab world, Morocco is normalizing relations with Israel. Previously, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan normalized relations with Israel before Palestinian demands were met.
The Palestinians have also strongly opposed the Moroccan agreement. They say that the Arab states have moved away from recognizing Israel before the old demands of a Palestinian state are met.
