The winner was announced at the virtual ceremony ‘The Best FIFA Football Awards’ on Thursday at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland. Although the event was virtual, the 32-year-old star received the award from FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Coaches of all the world’s football teams, captains, FIFA-selected journalists from around the world and registered football fans on FIFA.com have been selected as the best players of the year.
On July 25 of last year, FIFA released a list of 11 people selected by a panel of experts to consider their performance from July 20 to October 6. Then last Friday, the shortlist was narrowed to three.
Lewandowski, who won the UEFA Player of the Year award on 1 October by beating Manuel Neuer and Kevin de Bruyne, had a great season.

He also played a decisive role in the team that won the Bundesliga and the German Cup. The 32-year-old forward scored 55 goals in 46 appearances in all competitions last season.
Lewandowski scored 17 more goals last season than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues in all competitions.

The FIFA World Player of the Year and the French Football Magazine Ballon d’Or were awarded separately at the start. From 2010 to 2015, the two awards were merged for six years and became the FIFA Ballon d’Or. The Argentine forward won the award for three consecutive years. Messi won the award again in 2015 after Ronaldo won the next two years.
Since 2016, two separate awards have been awarded. Ronaldo won the FIFA World Player of the Year and the Ballon d’Or in 2016 and 2017. Messi won the FIFA ‘The Best’ award for the first time since winning the Ballon d’Or last year after Madrid won all awards the following year.
The coronavirus outbreak has not been normal in football this year. That is why, for the first time in the 64-year history of the Ballon d’Or, France Football magazine refrained from deciding to award this year’s award.
