It is possible to reduce the cost of building a house with blocks instead of bricks by about 30 percent. The durability of the house is more, it is also beautiful to look at. Also, houses built on the block are cold in summer and hot in winter. There is no harm to the environment when making the block. Despite being such a useful building material, builders are less interested in using blocks.
More than 30 companies are known to be making blocks in Bangladesh on private initiative. A Concord Group company established a block factory in Tejgaon in the capital in 2001. In addition, the government’s Housing and Building Research Institute (HBRI) has been working with the block since the 1980s. At present, there are more than 21 block manufacturing companies in the capital alone. Furthermore, HBRIO is selling various types of blocks commercially. Outside of Dhaka, there are around 10 block factories in Munshiganj, Mymensingh, Kishoreganj and Pirojpur. Most of the companies manufacture modern blocks such as CSEB, CSEB Interlocking, Sand Cement Hall Block, Thermer Block, Sandwich Panel and Ferro Cement Channel.
Apart from this, lightweight CLC blocks, concrete lining blocks, eco-friendly blocks, poly concrete blocks, paving blocks and tiles are also manufactured in the country. Experts say that the cost of a house or installation made with these blocks is low, durable and beautiful to look at compared to traditional bricks.
Taufiqul Islam Sharif, owner of Tiger Eco Bricks Factory in Munshiganj, told Kaler Kanth: “A block equal to four and a half bricks would sell for 40 rupees. But now I can sell it for 25-30 rupees. Despite being cheap and ecological, many still do not want to use the block due to lack of awareness. Although awareness has increased in Dhaka, the above trend is more in the cities of the district.
Niyamul Hasan, president of real estate company Hassan & Associates Limited, told Kaler Kanth: “If we can reduce the weight of the block a little more, it will increase the commercial use. Apart from this, no nails or anything else can be inserted into the wall of the house made on the block. Another problem is that the interest of ordinary people in the block remains low.
According to experts, building a house in a block reduces the cost by about 30 percent. It is used in thermal block or other walls as a result of thermal and acoustic insulation. Also, the weight of the brick house is less. Where it costs an average of 10 rupees to buy a brick, a block equal to four and a half bricks can be bought for 30 rupees. Two buildings at the HBRI facility, a primary school at Nalitabari in Sherpur, and six six-story buildings at the Bangladesh Rural Development Academy are being constructed with blocks. In addition, private companies have built more than 100 buildings in the capital, Dhaka. The entrepreneurs said that block buildings are being constructed in Kishoreganj, Munshiganj, Pirojpur and other towns in the district. Initially, there was a reluctance to use blocks, but now there is growing interest, experts said.
Apart from this, it became known that entrepreneurs from different parts of the country are taking advice from HBRI experts to start block businesses with training. The company is organizing meetings and seminars to encourage the use of blocks. HBRI has also run several programs outside of Dhaka.
Senior Research Officer of the Research Institute. Akhter Hossain Sarkar told Kaler Kantha: “It is possible to reduce the cost by up to 30 percent by building houses with blocks. We have also found evidence of this when calculating the cost of a house built on a block. At first there was absolutely no interest in the block. But now the interest is growing a lot. In addition to government organizations, private entrepreneurs must also work to raise awareness.
