Lawyers for the Supreme Court have protested the imposition of a court petition challenging the legitimacy of publishing a bulletin by appointing a judge’s son as Superior Court attorney. The lawyers deposited Tk 1 in a box as a symbolic protest against the High Court verdict.
On Monday (November 9), lawyers held a symbolic protest on the second floor of the Supreme Court Bar Association building.
Regarding the protest, attorney Anik R Haque said: “A contempt of court rule has been issued against two of our attorneys for posting the Sukumar Roy poem and the Three Idiots movie on Facebook. At the same time, they have been fined 100 rupees. We believe this (well) was not done to just two attorneys. We believe that all of our Supreme Court attorneys have been fined. That is why I am protesting symbolically.
Lawyer Kumar Debul Dey, a member of the former executive committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association, said: “We are in favor of two lawyers. If court time is wasted in filing a case, then the case cannot be filed.
Faizullah Fayez, another Supreme Court attorney, said in a symbolic protest: “We have come together to fine two attorneys. The attorney published an old poem by Sukumar Roy. The court has issued a contempt of court rule for him. that put the poem in front of the box We think all the lawyers have been fined.
Earlier on Sunday (November 8), the High Court ruled that the publication of the Bangladesh Bar Association newsletter was legal for Barrister Jumman Siddiqui, the son of a judge who failed the bar exam. Lawyer Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon and lawyer Ishrat Hasan were also fined Tk 100 each. The fine was imposed for wasting time in court when filing those orders. A higher court of Judge Govindra Chandra Tagore and Judge Mohammad Ullah approved the order.
Meanwhile, at one stage of the court case hearing, the court also issued a contempt judgment against lawyer Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon and lawyer Ishrat Hasan.
Regarding contempt of court, Barrister Sumon said: “Long ago I published about the son of a Supreme Court justice. That is why the court has issued a contempt rule.
Advocate Ishrat Hasan said: ‘I have written some verses from the poet Sukumar Roy’s poem’ Justice ‘on Facebook. The court felt it was contempt. That is why it has issued a rule.
By the way, on December 16, 2019, the Superior Court suspended the processing of the Gazette issued directly to the son of a judge as a Superior Court attorney. At the same time, the court issued a rule asking why the publication of the gazette should not be outlawed as a Superior Court attorney. A High Court bench composed of Judge Tariq ul Hakim and Judge Iqbal Kabir approved the order.
According to the order petition, Jumman Siddiqui, the son of a High Court judge, failed to pass the Bangladesh Bar examination on several occasions. However, on September 19 of last year, Jumman Siddiqui was directly listed in the Superior Court as a lawyer and the gazette was published on October 31 of last year.
