HT Imam, who was cabinet secretary to the expatriate government during the liberation war, has been the prime minister’s political adviser since 2014.
HT Imam joined the liberation war in 1971 after renouncing his allegiance to Pakistan while serving in the Pakistani government. He is also the first independent Bangladesh cabinet secretary.

Hossain Tawfiq Imam was born in 1939 and later became known as HT Imam.
Due to his father’s work, he spent his childhood and adolescence in different districts. He passed the Dhaka Collegiate School tuition. He passed the intermediate level of Pabna Edward College.
He was admitted to Dhaka University with a BA from Rajshahi College and an MA in economics. Then he was involved in the left-wing student organization.
After graduation, HT Imam joined teaching as a professor of economics at Rajshahi Government College. After that, he participated in the Pakistan Civil Service Exam and got a job in the government. He has a postgraduate diploma from the London School of Economics.
After independence, he was Cabinet Secretary until August 26, 1975. From 1976 to 1974, he was project manager at the Public Administration Training Center in Savar. Later he became Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Planning.
After retiring, HT Imam became an active member of the Awami League. He was playing an important role in driving the party election. Sheikh Hasina was co-chair of the electoral management committee of the Awami League.
After the formation of the government in 2009, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina appointed him an adviser. At first he was a consultant in public administration. In 2014, he was appointed political adviser to the Prime Minister.
Some of the books written by HT Imam on the management of freedom fighters received much prominence from book critics.
The corpse of the late prime minister’s advisor was brought to his village house in Ullapara in Sirajganj on Thursday morning. His janaza was held on the Akbar Ali Government College campus at 11 a.m.
After the coffin was returned to Dhaka, another janaza was performed at the Azad Mosque in Gulshan at noon after paying tribute in the central Shaheed Minar. He was buried in the Banani Cemetery in Dhaka in the afternoon.
