Laldia Char finally came under the control of the Chittagong port without any hindrance. Even two days before the start of the campaign, the protesters had been protesting the eviction campaign without a human chain or press conference. With this in mind, the port was preparing to carry out eviction activities with the help of the RAB, the police and Ansar led by five magistrates. Excavators, trucks were ready; The airport is closed to traffic to avoid possible problems. However, in the end, the eviction process ended peacefully without any hindrance from the protesters.

The 52 acres of Chittagong Port Authority land across the Karnafuli River, next to the boat club in the Paienen area, are known as Laldia Char. The port authorities had planned to install a cargo terminal at this location. But after years of waiting to evict the squatters, the port authorities finally withdrew from the project. Now the port authorities will use the terminal to be built in Laldia Char as a place to store containers.

Rear Admiral M Shahjahan, President of Chittagong Port, said: “We were fully prepared to launch the operation, but the people of Laldiya left on their own initiative. I did not fall on a rock. 90 percent of the people have already left. He said: ‘We are fencing 52 acres of land. Permanent walls will be provided at a later time. The Ansar will guarantee safety.

The demolition of the building began with bulldozers in the afternoon after the locals left the house in the afternoon. And the fencing work continued. The work was overseen by five magistrates led by Saiful Islam, the port’s executive magistrate.

Alamgir Hasan, coordinator of the Laldia Char Rehabilitation Implementation Committee, said: “Many people from Laldia Char leave the area on Saturdays and Sundays. From the way we have been treated for this eviction, it appears that we are not citizens of Bangladesh.

Laldia Char is known to have been out of Chittagong port for years. After the illegal eviction of a large area near Laldia Char, it was leased from the port to an organization called Incontrade. Lawyer Manzil Morshed filed a judicial petition in the high court to guarantee the flow of the Karnafuli river by dislodging the illegal structures next to it. When the verdict ordered the eviction of all illegal facilities, it was delayed by various complications. There were also instructions to end the eviction of squatters and report to the high court by March 9.

Following that directive, the Minister of State for Maritime Transport, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, arrived in Chittagong on February 24 and announced that the eviction campaign would continue. At the same time, a list of selfish people who have carried out economic activities by renting Laldia Char has been drawn up. The state minister said that the reputation of the Chittagong port would not be tolerated by a few people. Following the Minister’s instructions, the Chittagong Port Authority began preparations for the illegal eviction.
