King Salman bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia told US President Donald Trump that Saudi Arabia wants a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian problem under the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative.
The two leaders spoke by phone after the United States announced mediation to normalize relations with Israel, the country’s state news agency reported on Monday.
King Salman praised the US peace efforts in the Middle East and told the US president that Saudi Arabia wanted to see a just and neutral solution to the Palestinian problem based on the Arab Peace Initiative.
Under the Arab Peace Initiative, the Arab states offered Israel recognition of Palestine and normalization of relations through a state agreement. Furthermore, the Arab states will normalize relations with Israel if it leaves the Palestinian territories occupied in the 1967 Middle East war.
Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, has yet to recognize Israel.
This month, however, Israel has allowed itself to use its airspace for air travel with the United Arab Emirates.
A White House spokesman said Trump welcomed King Salman’s decision during the conversation. During this time they talked about regional security. Al Jazeera
