North Korean President Kim Jong Un apologized to South Korea. Kim sent a letter to Moon Jae-in. The South Korean president’s office said in a statement. Kim apologized for killing a South Korean government official earlier this week.
South Korea says the officer was trying to reach North Korea. It was later found floating in North Korean waters. Seoul claims the officer was shot and killed and his body set on fire.
North Korea is believed to have ordered strict surveillance of the border to prevent the deadly coronavirus from entering, prompting speculation that the country’s troops fired at the officer in the south.
The southern army did not explain how the 48-year-old fisherman got to northern waters.
A US military commander in South Korea said earlier this month that North Korea had ordered its troops to “shoot to kill” at the border to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in the form of a global epidemic.
