The release of BNP President Khaleda Zia has been extended for another six months. Approved files in this regard have been sent from the Ministry of Law to the Ministry of the Interior. The Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Anisul Haque, told the media on Thursday afternoon.
Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who was convicted in two corruption cases, was temporarily released by the government in an executive order on March 25 amid a coronavirus epidemic. He was released after the suspension of his sentence for six months. The launch period ends on September 24.
Earlier, on behalf of the BNP president’s family, his brother Shamim Eskender submitted an application to the Interior Ministry on Tuesday. He called on the government to take steps to free his sick sister.
Khaleda Zia was also taken to the UK for treatment on behalf of her family. But the government did not allow him to leave the country. Once again, Khaleda Zia’s family has applied for permission to travel abroad.
The justice minister further told the media that the request for Khaleda Zia’s release was sent to the Interior Ministry on August 25. Khaleda Zia has been in jail for more than two years since February 8, 2016.
Khaleda Zia was serving a 17-year sentence in two corruption cases related to the Zia Orphanage Trust and the Charitable Trust.
