Shafiqul Islam Kajal, a photojournalist and editor of the Pakshakal daily, returned home after nine months. First he disappeared, then he was arrested and went to jail. He was released on bail from Keraniganj Central Jail at 11 a.m. on Friday. Relatives, including his wife Julia Ferdousi and son Manoram Palak, have been waiting at the jail door since the morning awaiting Kajal’s release. Kajal walked out the door, hugged the boy and started crying.
Regarding Kajal’s release, Mahbubul Islam from Dhaka Central Jail said: “He was released from jail after receiving the documents.”
Kajal declined to say anything about his arrest, including his release from prison. After returning home, he simply said to Kaler’s voice: ‘I first express my gratitude to Almighty God. I also express my gratitude and gratitude to several people and workers of the media and human rights organizations at home and abroad who have expressed their voice to demand my release. He then said, ‘I don’t hold a grudge against anyone right now. I have accepted everything as the writing on my forehead. ‘
Recalling the family’s tireless efforts to find and rescue him, he said: ‘I am also proud of what my son Manoram Palak has done for me. I am also grateful to my expat younger brother Shaheen. ”
On December 16, the High Court granted bail to photojournalist Shafiqul Islam Kajal in a case filed under the Digital Security Law at the Hazaribagh and Kamrangir Char police stations. The journalist was also released on bail from the High Court in a case brought by Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on November 24. As a result, there is no obstacle to his release on bail, lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua said.
On March 9, a case was filed against 32 people, including Kajal, at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the capital Dhaka under the Digital Security Law. The case was brought by Saifuzzaman Shikhar, a deputy from the ruling Magura-1 constituency party. Then, on March 10 and 11, two more cases were filed under the Digital Security Law at the Hazaribagh and Kamrangir Char police stations in the capital.
After the case was closed, Kajal disappeared after leaving the Daily Pakshakal office in Hatirpul on the night of March 10. On March 11, his wife Julia Ferdousi filed a general newspaper at the Chawkbazar police station. Later on the night of March 16, Kajal was abducted and his son Manoram Palak filed a case at the Chawkbazar police station.
The BGB arrested Kajal on the night of May 2, 53 days after his disappearance from Dhaka, for infiltrating from Sadipur, a camp on the Indian border in Benapole, Jessore. The next day, on May 3, the court granted journalist Kajal bail in a case brought by the BGB for infiltration, but he was later shown arrested in another case under Section 54 at the Kotwali Model Police Station. Kajal has been in jail ever since.
Meanwhile, another media worker, cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore, has been in jail since May 8 in a case brought under the Digital Security Act for posting anti-government posts on Facebook. On December 16, three UN experts called on the government to release the teenager. They are Karima Benun, UN Special Rapporteur on Cultural Rights, Irene Khan, Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Laleng Mefokong, Special Rapporteur on the right to physical and mental health.
