The first Bengali Muslim doctor was Johra Begum Kazi. Google scribbled in his memory.

He was born on October 15, 1912 in the village of Rajnan in the undivided state of Madhya Pradesh, India. His father’s name was Dr. Kazi Abdus Sattar and his mother’s name was Mosammad Anjuman Nesa.

Their ancestral home is in the Gopalpur village of the Kalkini Police Station in the Madaripur district of Bangladesh.

After obtaining the MBBS degree in 1935, Johra Begum Kazi entered his career.

He came to Dhaka after partition in 1947 and joined Dhaka Medical College and Hospital in 1947. While serving at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he also served as an honorary colonel at Combined Military Hospital.

He was the head and honorary professor of the Department of Gynecology at Midford Medical College Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

After retiring in 1983, he worked as a consultant at Holy Family Red Crescent Hospital for several years. He subsequently worked as an honorary professor at Bangladesh Medical.

In recognition of his work, he received the Ekushey Padak, the Begum Rokeya Padak and the Takhma-e-Pakistani.

Dr. Johra Begum Kazi passed away on November 8, 2006.
