As a result, millions more Americans will be vaccinated in the coming weeks, experts say.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Saturday approved the emergency use of the J&A vaccine for adults (18 years and older), Reuters reported.
Earlier on Friday, a panel of experts unanimously recommended that the vaccine be approved.
Johnson’s vaccine is expected to be shipped to various immunization centers beginning Sunday or Monday.
The United States has approved three vaccines against the coronavirus. Previously, the country had approved the Pfizer / Bioentech and Mordana vaccines. Those two companies must be vaccinated in two doses.
Johnson’s vaccine is now expected to be approved in other parts of the world after the United States approves it.
Acknowledging the approval, US President Joe Biden said: “This is good news for everyone in America. An encouraging development.”
He also warned that “there is still a long way to go.”
“As we celebrate today’s news, I urge all Americans to continue to smoke their hands, adhere to social distancing, and continue to wear masks,” he said in a statement.
“As I have said many times, with the spread of new rates, the situation can get worse again and this improvement can be reversed.”
According to the BBC, the J&J vaccine will be more affordable than the Pfizer and Mordana vaccines and can be stored in a regular refrigerator rather than the freezer.
Trials have shown that the vaccine can prevent serious diseases. Even then, the overall effectiveness of the vaccine is 6 percent.
The Belgian company Johnson manufactured the vaccine. The company agreed to deliver 100 million doses of the vaccine to the United States by June.
The United Kingdom, the European Union (EU) and Canada have also purchased J&A vaccines and another 500 million doses to ship to the poorest countries through the Kovacs program.
