The Japanese government declared a state of emergency in seven districts in mid-April as coronavirus infections increased. Later, as the situation deteriorated, the state of emergency spread throughout the country and was declared effective until the 31st of this month.

However, the government has lifted a state of emergency in 39 of the country’s 48 districts amid progress in recent weeks in efforts to control the coronavirus. Previously, a panel of government experts analyzed the situation and recommended lifting the state of emergency in 39 districts of Japan.

At today’s press conference, Prime Minister Abe mentioned that adequate measures have been taken to control the spread of the coronavirus in these districts. He said that experts and government officials came to this conclusion considering the recent number of infections and local medical facilities and tests. However, he asked the people of those areas to remain vigilant despite the lifting of the state of emergency. He said the state of emergency would be lifted next week, considering the progress of the situation in eight other districts, including Tokyo and Osaka.

Pointing to the public’s contribution to Japan’s success in controlling the coronavirus, he said that the number of new infections has decreased as people responded to the government’s call to stay home and adhere to social isolation. However, he reminded citizens of the need to maintain these measures even if the state of emergency is lifted. At the same time, he did not rule out the possibility of another coronavirus wave hitting. He said that if such a situation arises, the government will again declare a state of emergency.

The measure comes when the number of coronavirus cases in Japan has exceeded 16,000. So far, more than 800 people have died of coronavirus in Japan. However, over the decades, the number of infections and deaths has decreased; Promising progress has been made in both cases. Today up to 30 new infections have been identified in Tokyo. With this, the number of new infections detected for 12 consecutive days is limited to one arrow.
