I don't want to lie down forever
  • Soumitra came to Bangladesh for the last time and said

Morsalin Mizan Soumitra Chatterjee, a short-lived Bengali actor, did not want to go to bed forever. He was very old. He still kept his dream of survival alive. This is why he continued to act like an energetic man even in his old age.

Soumitra last revealed this fact when he came to perform on the Bangladeshi stage in September 2015. Take part in a special story talk organized in the seminar room of Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka and tell the story of your childhood and how you became a superstar. Satyajit Ray’s experience of working with him, the past and present of the two Bengali films, theatrical practice, Natya Andolan and many other important evaluations. This reporter had the opportunity to join the invaluable story chat. Parts of the conversation on various topics were later posted in public. Today, the memory of the veteran actor’s loss is being hammered.

Soumitra Chatterjee continues to act in one happy movie after another. How is that possible? Have you acted so much in a life that fatigue does not come? Yes, in response to this question, he proudly expressed his love for life. Said, not acting means sitting down. Sitting means lying down. From bed to bed forever. I do not want that. That is why I continue to act.

Nature, unfortunately, did not allow this desire to survive as an actor to last too long! It is gone. But how successful and lively he was can be guessed from the conversation that day.

Soumitra looks back not only now, but also. Trying to see the image of my childhood rubbing the glasses, he said, the initial environment of my growth was very favorable. Although my father was a lawyer by profession, he loved acting. He used to come home from Kolkata to Krishnanagar every Friday. He used to recite kindly at night. It would show us how to do it. Something has been taken out of there.

However, the second reason to act is very interesting. At the same time, especially significant. Soumitra said, I came to act to hide. When I was a child, my family used to talk a lot about me. Many would say, where did that boy come from in our house? The color of the skin is black. No nose, no eyes. He was sick enough. He had to stay in bed for 63 days with typhoid fever. For all these reasons, there was a kind of inferiority inside. It seemed like nothing was going to happen to me. But whenever I acted, people praised me. He commented that the praise and the opportunity to hide is a great reason to act.

Soumitra said that after arriving in Calcutta, he began to see its theater. In this context, Shishir Kumar Bhaduri came to the fore. He said, “I was surprised to see this famous artist perform.” Then I had the opportunity to get in touch with him for three years. There the bases of my thought are laid.

The experience of working on the radio has also helped Soumitra to become Soumitra. Beautiful full voice. He became the announcer for All India Radio with that voice. “I had to wait and see when a song would end,” he said. After that I will give a new explanation. This job was quite annoying. But doing so increases my patience. Bigger than that, I learned to use the radio microphone well. So the preparation continued.

And that Soumitra today, is found in the movie. He is the protagonist of the film. How it began? How did you really get on with Ray? In response, the lucky actor said that he was very thirsty to act in movies. But the opportunity came unexpectedly. Then he became ‘Pather Panchali’. The name of Satyajit Ray is heard everywhere. At that time, the director was looking for a college student for the next film. Then, through a friend of mine, I received an offer to visit his home. But at first glance he said, hey, you’ve gotten so big! However, not everyone went to Chukebu here. I spoke a lot that day. He told me. After a long time I realized that I was trying to understand my way of speaking, my pronunciation, my personality. After the movie ‘Aparajita’, he announced the construction of ‘Apur Sansar’. He thought of the Apu family in the sense of world family. Then I had chickenpox. I got a call and went to meet him in that state. This time he said at first glance, everyone said that his face was full of scars! After that, the question: do you want to act? Keep in contact. It can be necessary. So Ray was doing two movies together. ‘Jalsaghar’ and ‘Paraspathar’. He told me to go watch the shooting. They may tell me to cut my fear. So one day on the way back after seeing the filming of ‘Jalsaghar’, I said: Manik Babu, should I go this time? Without responding, he said, let’s talk about the image of faith. He made me stand in front of that famous actor and suddenly he told me, take pictures, this is my Apu from Apu Sansar! So I can’t explain my condition. Thus began the movie. Soumitra, however, added: “It is not as easy as it seems to me.” I became the talk of the town with ‘Apur Sansar’. The name was Dham. Even after that, acting for a long time means a great fight. There is a lot to leave out. It is pay. It still continues.

Some more in between. Then again the details of Ray and Jugal’s path. Soumitra said: “Despite the huge talent gap, I had a great relationship with Manik Babu. I had the opportunity to learn the first steps of a great artist. The understanding between us was quite good. Agree on the basics. Therefore, it would be convenient to work with him. He probably got some benefits from me too. If not, why would you take me as an important character in a movie like 15 o’clock? At this stage is the identity of the actor’s sense of humor. He said he might have thought that if he took me, he wouldn’t have to bother hitting people. He said that since he has acted in many of Ray’s films, he did not want to act in any of the characters. His statement that no one is understood for the sake of making Ray more clear. Introducing the courtesy of the dear director, he said that Manik Babu had offered me a role in a movie and told me that there were only twenty dialogues of the character. What will you do Expressing all his love for Ray, the powerful actor said, “Even if they asked me to stand under the umbrella of Manik Babu’s house, I would say ‘yes.’ I said ‘yes’ to the character. Then one day he called me and said: I have given you a lot of freedom. Whatever you wanted to do, you did. I will think about this image together. This is how we have worked together for a long time. Soumitra said that even though he wasn’t in any movies, Ray used to talk to him about the film’s script.

The subject of the poet Soumitra Chatterjee also came up in the discussion. How about poetry? When asked, he said, “Poetry actually gave me a chance to catch up.” I have been writing poems since I was in school. You should be ashamed of yourself. Because, at that age, something starts to feel good about girls. Then the day comes when a special girl feels good. He also said that the effort for which the first poem was written has been successful. He added with a laugh, then it took a long time to hold a girl’s hand. However, this feeling of love inspired him to write poetry. Then there was the identity crisis. Finding yourself in that context is also a reason to write poetry. Many say that poetry and acting are two completely opposite genres. I think there were different links between all the industries. There is. Bachik artist Golam Sarwar raised the subject of recitation on the show. In response to your question, the moderator of the show said that recitation is very important. It is very necessary. Working with the language with the voice is the first condition of the actor. The first thing is to speak. If the actor does not practice the recitation, the practice is not complete. He used to recite and sing aloud every night. He said that he had learned this recitation lesson from Rabindranath.

Soumitra also wrote the play. In this context, he said, others took my friends who used to write plays. The ones they gave me didn’t look good. The drama is written to fill this void. I read a lot of outside dramas. That helped. Soumitra gave the information to write a total of thirty works. After that, he can’t help but be surprised.

Professional theater did not develop much in Calcutta. A continuous effort is being made here too. It is not happening. All things considered, what is the future? In answer to that question, said the theater star Soumitra, the history of the professional stage in Calcutta is more than 100 years. Once upon a time there was an excellent development. But the decline began when professionalism and commercialism came together. He said that if you do some work professionally, you can take on more responsibilities. It seems that the demands of those who perform or sing in front of me have increased. You must satisfy them to the fullest.

Soumitra also spoke about the dramatic cinema of Bangladesh. That said, there is a lot of expectation about this country. Bangladesh has been liberated at great cost. That sacrifice cannot fail. From here, things get complicated, hopefully. In the same discussion, he harshly criticized his hometown, Calcutta. That said, I see the exact opposite in Calcutta. Everything is falling apart. Everyone loves to imitate. They have bad values. The language young people speak is so heterogeneous that it is difficult to understand how much Bengali. He then reiterated his confidence in Bangladesh and said: “He has retained Bengali nationality.” I hope to hold on.

Bangladeshi TV channels are not seen in Calcutta. The old accusation was also raised in front of him. In response, the veteran actor said that communication between the two Bengalis is important. Very urgent As important as it is to you, it is even more important to West Bengal. There was also talk of distorting the Bangladeshi language in Kolkata dramas and films. In this context, Soumitra Chatterjee said, there is no better Bengali actor in Kolkata. They cannot speak Bengali well. I don’t know who does these things. At this stage, he made the most difficult criticisms of the television series. He said, don’t call the television series drama. That is not the identity of the theater. Not the identity of the work. These are the worst things that can happen. He commented that the television series is even worse than the movie. Said, the beginning of the movie is in the middle. There is nothing like a television series. All in all, a flawless one-story chat. So who would say that the story talk will be the last story talk in Dhaka Soumitra?
