The High Court has set a time of 2 p.m. Wednesday to announce the verdict on the issue of compensation for Jahlam, a jute factory worker who was acquitted in 26 cases brought by the ACC for embezzlement of bank money .
The high court of judges FRM Nazmul Ahsan and judge KM Kamrul Quader will deliver the verdict. The court set the date for Tuesday.
The court waited for the verdict to be announced any day after the final hearing on February 12 on the compensation rule. The case was at the top of the court’s agenda today. However, the court also heard statements from lawyers for the ACC (Anti-Corruption Commission), Sonali Bank and BRAC Bank.
Attorney Khurshid Alam Khan represented the ACC, attorney Sheikh Mohammad Zakir Hossain represented Sonali Bank, and attorney Anisul Hasan represented BRAC Bank. Deputy Attorney General ABM Abdullah Al Mahmoud Bashar and Deputy Attorney General M Saiful Alam appeared for the state.
Meanwhile, yesterday the court asked the lawyers of both parties to know that while Jahlam was in prison, he was deprived of his personal liberty. So can the ignorant get compensation? In response, both parties said that Jahlam deserved compensation. However, ACC’s lawyer said that Sonali Bank will pay compensation and Sonali Bank’s lawyer said ACC will pay compensation.
ACC’s attorney said that the ACC has completed the investigation process based on the information provided by the bank. So this situation has arisen. For this reason, the bank has to take responsibility. The court said, why is the real defendant Abu Salek out of reach? In response, ACC’s lawyer said: ‘I heard you went to India. However, India has been informed at the border. It was late for Kavid. I hope they catch it. Sonali Bank’s lawyer later told the court: ‘The ACC has made this Jahalam a defendant after the investigation. The responsibility does not lie with Sonali Bank, but with the ACC. Then the ACC will pay compensation.
