According to university sources, the university administration has so far received more than 30 complaints of wrongdoing against Sudipta Shaheen. He was last charged with striking and breaking the leg of a pickup driver named Nahid Hossain on October 16. University professors and students reacted angrily to the incident. Although a tea shop by profession, Nahid has made a living by transporting goods in vans, as the campus has been closed for a long time.
He entered the closed campus that day in a van to transport goods. Sudipta Shaheen detained Nahid as he was leaving campus in a van at the request of a woman who was heading home after transporting goods for the night. It was later alleged that he was taken to the security branch office, beaten and his leg broken.
In the wake of this incident, more than 800 students signed an online mass and demanded the removal of Sudipta Shaheen. The university administration formed an investigative committee to investigate the above allegations in response to demands from professors and students. The decision was made against Sudipta Shaheen.
Rahima Kaniz, the university’s acting registrar, told Prothom Alo that Sudipta Shaheen was suspended based on the preliminary investigation report. Sudipta will sit in the office regularly, but he will not do his duty and will remain in his assigned home on campus. He said he could say if there would be a final investigation into the matter after reviewing the documents.
