Jaffna Stallions have won the first Sri Lanka Premier League (LPL) title. In the final held on Wednesday (December 16), the Jaffna Stallions defeated the Gaul Gladiators by 53 runs thanks to an all-round performance from Shoaib Malik.
Jaffna hit first at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota and scored 16 of six in the assigned 20 overs. In response, Gall’s innings stopped at 135 for nine.
Batting the 189-run goal, the team lost three wickets for seven runs and was under pressure from the start. Captain Vanuka Rajapaksa eased the pressure a bit. Vanuka scored 40 of 16 balls for 55 runs in the fourth wicket.
However, the Gaul hitters could not withstand the pressure of the race pace. Galia lost windows at regular intervals for quick tours. Azam Khan was sacked for 36 of 18 balls. In the end, the Gladiators couldn’t score more than 135 runs for nine wickets. Jaffna Stallions won the title with an easy 53-run win.
Shoaib Malik and Usman Shenwari from Jaffna took two windows each for Dhananjaya de Silva, Suranga Lakmal, Wanindu Hasaranga and Duane Olivia.
Previously, Johnson’s starters, Johnson Charles and Aviska Fernando, won the toss and chose to hit. Charles was fired for 26 races. After that, Charith Asalanka (10) and Aviska Fernando (26) left and Jaffna lost three wickets for 60 races.
Shoaib Malik was sacked for 46 of 35 balls. After that, Dhananjaya de Silva and Thisara Perera batted at a stormy pace and Jaffna scored 16 runs for the loss of six wickets. Dhananjaya was sent off for 33 of 20 balls, but Perera was unbeaten on 39 of 14 balls.
Dhananjaya Lakshan of Gaul Gladiators took three windows and Mohammad Amir, Sahan Arakchige and Laksan Sandakan took one window each.
