Immigration and customs checkpoints are slowly returning to normal eight months after passport holders stopped crossing the Benapole international checkpoint to prevent the spread of the coronavirus around the world.
At present, Bangladeshis travel to India on new medical visas and old business visas with negative crown certificates. Additionally, passengers from India arrive in Bangladesh every day on work and business visas.
Benapole International Checkpost Immigration OC Ahsan Habib said the Indian government had relaxed the ban on Bangladeshis from traveling to India on March 13. At present, Bangladeshis can go to India on a new medical visa, a student visa, and an old Covid-19 negative certified business visa. And you can come to Bangladesh from India on a work and business visa. However, the crossing of diplomatic visas has never stopped.
Health workers are monitoring the health of foreigners coming from India with thermal scanners.
Sujan Sen, medical officer in charge of the medical team, said that everyone needed to have a ‘negative Covid-19 certificate’ to travel. Even after that, all passengers arriving in Bangladesh are allowed to enter after a medical examination. The control pole scanner is extremely modern. It can automatically diagnose the temperature of each passenger from outside. Also, the higher the temperature, the greater the writing on the body.
On March 13 this year, when the crossing was closed due to a ban imposed by the Indian government, the indigenous people were trapped in Bangladesh. Later, after five months, they first repatriated the indigenous people trapped in Bangladesh. Businessmen and patients in this country fell into chaos because the Bangladeshis did not accept Petrapol’s immigration to India. By considering them, the Indian government has given them the opportunity to travel on medical and business visas starting in November.
Meanwhile, although the ban was relaxed, tourist visa travel has not started. Now 90 percent of those who go to India have medical visas. With the introduction of the tourist visa, the control area of the two countries will return to normal.
Jahidul Islam (52) from Dhaka, Shawkat Ali (54) and Sumi Khatun (45) from Khulna go to India for treatment. Talk to them at the checkpoint on Sunday.
Jahidul Islam said, I am a cancer patient. I have been receiving treatment at Vellore for two years. Corona has not been able to see a doctor for a year. I am going to India for treatment as the ban has been relaxed.
Sumi Khatun said: I am going to Chennai for medical visa treatment. Although the medical visa is valid for 3 months to 6 months, this visa has the opportunity to travel only once. I am skeptical about how much it will satisfy the need.
Although tens of thousands of passport holders travel this route every day during normal business hours, 1,429 people have crossed it in the last three days.
275 people went to India on Saturday and 162 people came. On Friday there were 356 people and 181 people came. On Thursday 26 people attended and 162 people came. Immigration OC Ahsan Habib believes that there is no possibility of increasing passenger travel until the travel visa is introduced.
