US President Donald Trump called the day of Israel’s historic agreement with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain the “dawn of a new Middle East.” Trump spoke at the signing ceremony of an agreement to keep relations between the two Gulf states, the United Arab Emirates and Israel, completely normal. Trump, like the United Arab Emirates, Israel and Bahrain, is calling the deal historic.

The deal was negotiated by the Trump administration. Since the birth of the state of Israel in 1948, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates have recognized Israel as the third and fourth Gulf states. Trump has expressed hope that other countries will follow in his footsteps, but called on the Palestinians not to do so until the conflict with Israel is resolved.

Over the years, most of the Arab countries have boycotted Israel. The Arab states said they would only establish relations with Israel if the protracted Israeli-Palestinian conflict was resolved.

“After decades of division and conflict, we are beginning the emergence of a new Middle East,” Trump told hundreds of people gathered at the signing ceremony at the White House on Tuesday. “We are gathered here today to change history.”

Welcoming the deal, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “This is a turning point in history, the beginning of a new horizon for peace.

However, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said peace in the Middle East is only possible if Israel withdraws from the occupied territories. “Peace, security and stability will not return to the region unless the Israeli occupation is completed,” Abbas said in a statement after the agreement was signed.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military said two rockets were fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip at the time the agreement was signed.
