Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has warned about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia. He also warned that the conflict could escalate into a regional war.
“We must be careful that the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia does not turn into a regional war,” Rouhani said in a televised speech. Our work is based on peace and we hope that stability will return peacefully to the region.
“Iran will not allow terrorists to enter our borders under various pretexts,” he said.
Azerbaijan and ethnic Armenians have been at odds over Nagorno-Karabakh for more than 25 years. Last week, on September 28, the conflict between the two neighboring countries began. The conflict lasted 11 days. More than two hundred people died.
Previously, some 30,000 people were killed in the 1990s war between neighboring Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The idea is that if this war goes on for a long time, the regional allies will get involved.
Armenia is a member of the military alliance of the former Soviet Union. This alliance is led by Russia. Turkey, which has conflicting relations with Armenia, is a close ally of Azerbaijan. Yerevan has alleged that Turkey sent mercenaries from northern Syria to strengthen Azerbaijan in the Karabakh conflict. Ankara has denied the allegations.
Although Nagorno-Karabakh is within Azerbaijan, ethnic Armenians have been controlling the region, with Armenia supporting it. Although the region was separated from Azerbaijan in the 1969-94 war, it has not yet been recognized as an independent state.
