The Middle East has threatened retaliation for the brutal assassination of Iran’s top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh. An adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei made the announcement after his death on Friday.
According to the Middle East-based media outlet Al Jazeera, Mohsen was attacked on Friday in a city called Absard, 60 kilometers east of Tehran. His car was bombed and then fired with a machine gun.
Mohsin’s bodyguards and family were also seriously injured in the attack.
Confirming the death of the top nuclear scientist, Iran’s Defense Ministry said in a statement that Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was seriously injured during a clash between security forces and terrorists and was taken to hospital. But unfortunately the medical team could not save him.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the murder. However, Foreign Minister Javad Zarif blamed Israel for the killings.
In a tweet, he said that terrorists had killed a prominent Iranian scientist today. With this cowardice there is a great possibility of an Israeli role.
Condemning the incident, the Iranian Foreign Minister said that Iran called on the international community, especially the European Union, to end its shameful duplicity and condemn this state terrorism.
Meanwhile, Hussein Dehgan, one of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s advisers, announced in a tweet that he would avenge Mohsen’s assassination, saying that “we will strike this martyr like lightning and force him to regret his actions.”
In the eyes of the West, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was the mastermind behind Iran’s secret nuclear weapons program. Many have called him the “father of the Iranian bomb.”
Israel has yet to comment on the Mohsen assassination. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a press conference in 2016 that Iran was carrying out a nuclear weapons program, saying “remember his (Mohsin) name.”
Israel has been accused of “target killing” Iran’s top nuclear scientists for a decade. The country views Iran’s ability to secretly store nuclear weapons as a threat.
In the two years from 2010 to 2012, four of Iran’s top nuclear scientists died. Iran alleges that they were killed by Israeli assassins with the help of Westerners.
