A new investigation report into a rupee 100 million defamation case against actress Shami Kaiser for allegedly calling journalists “thieves” has been postponed.
Today, Sunday (November 15), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ziaur Rahman set December 10 for the presentation of the judicial report.
The day was set for the presentation of the report of the new investigation of the case. But the agency investigating the case, the Police Investigations Office (PBI), did not submit the report. The court set a new date for the presentation of the report.
Meanwhile, on November 25, 2019, Student Journal BD editor plaintiff Mia Md. Nuzhatul Hachan objected to the police report. After the hearing, the court ordered PBI to re-investigate the case. Previously, on October 24 last year, the truth of the case was not found in the court of the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ziaur Rahman, the investigation officer of the case, Shahbagh Police Station Inspector (investigation) Mahbubur Rahman.
On April 30 of the same year, in Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s court Asaduzzaman Noor, editor of Students Journal BD Mia Md. Nuzhatul Hachan filed a defamation lawsuit against Shami Kaiser. The court accepted the plaintiff’s statement and ordered the Shahbagh Police Station (OC) inspector to investigate and submit a report.
On April 24, 2019, two mobile phones belonging to Shami Kaiser were stolen from the opening ceremony of the e-commerce-based tourism site ‘Bindu 365’ at the Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Auditorium of the National Press Club. On the occasion, Shami Kaiser complained that journalists had stolen mobile phones. He also had his bodyguards search the bodies of journalists.
At the time, if someone wanted to leave the scene, Shami Kaiser’s security guards called him a ‘thief. The journalists were outraged. They expressed their disgust at the ceremony. Later, video captured by journalists showed that a lighting worker who had brought the cake to the event took the two smartphones.
