Sheikh Zahidur Rahman Zahid, who was sentenced to death for suffocating his wife and daughter, has been released after 20 years in prison. Zahid is the son of the late Sheikh Ilyas Sheikh of Narikeli Chandpur village in Rupsha upazila. He was released from Khulna jail around 8:30 on Monday. Khulna District Jail Superintendent. Omar Farooq confirmed the matter to reporters.
According to sources in the case and relatives, Sheikh Zahidur married Rahima, daughter of Moin Uddin of Uttar Para from Fakirhat Police Station in Bagerhat in 1994. Zahid had been living in her father-in-law’s house since the marriage. The bodies of his wife and daughter were recovered from Zahid’s home on January 15, 1996. Zahid’s father-in-law, Moin Uddin, filed a case with the Fakirhat Police Station.
The police presented the charge sheet on November 19, 1996. Previously, Zahidur surrendered to the court on January 16 of that year. He later escaped on bail, but the police detained him again.
On June 25, 2000, the Bagerhat District and Session Judge sentenced the defendant Zahidur Rahman to death. He appealed against the verdict on September 2 of that year. On August 25 of this year, the Supreme Court acquitted him. He was subsequently released from the Khulna District Jail on Monday night.
