To stop the game focused on the Indian Premier League game, it was decided to cut the connection of local cable lines during IPL matches in an upazila in the Feni district of Bangladesh. Recently, several people were arrested in various districts of Bangladesh for participating in IPL-focused gambling. The initiative has been taken by the municipality of Feni de Parashuram to stop playing games and keep the television connection closed.
This initiative has been taken to reduce the gambling tendency among the youth of Parashuram Upazila by focusing on IPL games. Nizam Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury from the municipality said: “From the moment the game starts tonight until the end of the game, only the connection to the whole area will be closed.”
He added: “During the IPL, thousands of young people from the area play in the tea shops. This decision has been made following the complaints of many families. We also have allegations that local youth have sold their motorcycles and battery vehicles for half price to raise money to bet on IPL matches.
Nizam Uddin Chowdhury said the speed of broadband internet service in the area would be limited in addition to keeping the connection off during the game. He said a team from the municipal administration would be on the ground to monitor whether the decision was being implemented. No formal or written instructions have been given to the administration of upazila in this regard. However, Parashuram Upazila Nirbahi’s officer Yasmin Akhter said she learned verbally about the directive.
IPL is the center of the game in many parts of the country.
Playing with IPL or any other cricket match format is not new to Bangladesh. In the shops of the city and the village, people are seen gathering mainly for the purpose of playing. There are also reports that young people from different areas are involved in crimes such as theft and robbery to raise money for the game.
In the past month, law enforcement officers have raided several districts, including Gaibandha, Kurigram and Sirajganj, and arrested several people accused of such gambling. The RAB raided Enayetpur in Sirajganj in the first week of this month and arrested 10 people on gambling charges and sentenced them to life imprisonment through a mobile court.
ASP Ershadur Rahman, who was the acting commander of the RAB-12 company at the time, said that after the news of the operation was published, he received complaints of gambling in the IPL from different locations in Sirajganj. He said: ‘The game is very widespread in different IPL-focused areas of Sirajganj. However, we can understand how deep this problem is after the campaign news is released. After the news was published, complaints began to come in from many places in Sirajganj.
