The onions arrived in Bangladesh on Saturday through the land ports of Hili in Dinajpur and Sonamasjid in Chapainawabganj.
On September 14 last year, the Indian government stopped exporting onions to Bangladesh. Then, on December 26, India lifted the ban on onion exports and issued an order that would take effect on the first day of the new year.
Harun Ur Rashid Harun, Chairman of the Healy Land Port Import-Export Group, said: “An Indian truck carrying onions entered the Healy land port from India at 3.30 pm on Saturday through the Healy checkpoint.” .
Mahfuzar Rahman Babu, an importer of the truck, said that 19 tons of onions had arrived in the truck.
Additionally, seven truckloads of onions arrived at the Sonamasjid land port in Chapainawabganj, said port manager Mainul Islam.
He said that a few more trucks are in the Indian port of Mahdipur to enter.
The onions have arrived through the land port of Satkhira in Bhomra.
Mostafizur Rahman Nasim, general secretary of the Bhomra Land Port Association of C&F Agents, said that at least nine trucks carrying 242 metric tons of Indian onions entered the Bhomra port on Saturday. Also, there are 20-25 trucks waiting to enter the port in the Ghojadanga area in India.
According to a Reuters report, the price of this staple in India has fallen sharply in recent weeks as the new season onion has started to rise.
That is why the country’s Ministry of Commerce has reviewed its export policy for onions and has withdrawn the export ban order.
India imposed a ban on onion exports on September 14 due to rising domestic prices and a shortage of stocks.
As a result, the price of onion continues to rise in the Bangladeshi market, at one stage the onion is sold at 130 rupees per kg.
In this situation, the government tried to handle the situation by importing onions of different colors and flavors from Myanmar, Pakistan, China, Egypt, Turkey and other countries.
