Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Managing Director Major General. Safinul Islam said that Indian citizens and BSF members often enter Bangladesh in violation of customary law and order.

He expressed concern that this could lead to misunderstandings and unpleasant situations between the two border guards.

This was stated in a joint statement issued on Friday of the 51st BGB-BSF CEO level conference held in Guwahati, India.

The Director General of the BGB expressed his concern over the killing and injury of unarmed Bangladeshi citizens by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) on the Bangladesh-India border and called for the perpetrators to submit to the law of their respective countries instead of killing them.

The two sides agreed to conduct joint night patrols in sensitive areas to reduce killings at the border to zero, according to the statement.

BGB Director General said: “The people of Bangladesh hope that BGB and BSF will take the necessary steps to reduce killings at the border to zero.

He called for every effort to be made to defend human rights and subject the perpetrators to the laws of their respective countries instead of killing them.

He emphasized the Integrated Border Management Plan (CBMP) and expressed concern about cross-border crimes such as smuggling of drugs, firearms, livestock, counterfeit currency, gold, etc. and sought the cooperation of the BSF to stop these crimes.

Meanwhile, BSF CEO Rakesh Asthana assured that the number of murders on the border would drop significantly in the near future.

Both sides agreed to prevent border people from crossing the border illegally and assured members of both forces that they would uphold border rules. In addition, the two parties agreed to exchange the necessary information about the smugglers and to carry out joint operations if necessary.

The Director General of the BGB also expressed concern about the presence of armed regional separatist terrorist groups in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region of Bangladesh in the Indian state of Mizoram.
