- Without warning, India stopped exporting onions to Bangladesh via several land ports in the country, including the land port of Petropole.
- About 150 truckloads of onions are trapped at the Petrapole border. The situation is similar in other land ports.
- Onion exports were halted on Monday due to some policy changes.
It is worth mentioning that the General Directorate of Foreign Trade, a body dependent on the Central Government’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has issued an order to stop the export of onions. He said the directive would take effect soon. Most of the onions are exported from India mainly through the Bhomra border of Satkhira, the southern Hili border of Dinajpur and the Benapole border of Jessore. But on Monday afternoon, Benapole Customs Deputy Commissioner Kalyan Mitra Chakma said a truckload of onions was exported to India in the morning. But then it stopped.
However, Kartik Ghosh, a trader on behalf of the Petrapole Exporters Association, said that the association had decided not to export onions to Bangladesh below £ 750. That is why there are many trucks on the border. However, Rafiqul Islam Royal, a Benapole onion importer on behalf of Bangladesh, said the onions have been imported at £ 250 since the start of the import trade with India. But the price of onion has risen in India due to the floods in Nasik. As a result, onion exporters have said that they will not export onions below 650 to Bangladesh.
It should be noted that domestic onions are now sold at Rs 60-70 / kg and Indian onions at Rs 50-55 / kg in Bangladeshi markets. Even a month ago, the price was much lower. But the price of onions is not new in Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, the price of onion rose to Rs 300 per kg in November last year. This time again, when India stopped exporting onions, Bangladeshi traders are concerned.
