Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has said that India’s Foreign Ministry regrets that it stopped exporting onions without prior notice.
The minister was answering a question from journalists at the ministry on Thursday (September 18).
However, no effect of the country’s remorse was visible at any land port on the country’s border. In the last two days, not a single onion truck from the previous LC has entered the country.
Onions are known not to have passed through the Healy land port since last Monday, as India has halted exports of onions. But in the meantime, huge amounts of imported onions are stuck at the border with India waiting to enter the country. Across the land port of Hili in Dinajpur, more than a hundred and a half trucks loaded with onions wait to be allowed into Bangladesh.
Harun-ur-Rashid Harun, chairman of the Healy land port import and export group, said the onion, which had been stuck for three days, was already going to spoil. He said a letter of credit (LC) was opened for the importation of around 10,000 metric tons of onions. But due to the decision of the Indian government, the onion has stopped arriving. This has caused economic losses to onion importers in the Healy land port.
Healy business sources said that Indian traders had informed them of the decision to supply onions to Bangladesh until last Sunday. But the traders waited, but the onions did not arrive all day on Wednesday. Indian exporters said the onions were not shipped because customs in the country were not allowed.
Meanwhile, given the news of the entry of onions to the country, prices have started to fall in the wholesale and retail markets. The onions were sold at Rs 6-80 per kg on Tuesday. Yesterday he sold onions at Rs 60-65 / kg.
