India is giving away a submarine to Myanmar for the first time. The submarine, called ANS Sindhubi, was purchased from Russia by Delhi in 1980. The Indus submarine will be refurbished and delivered to the Myanmar Navy this year.
This will be Myanmar’s first naval submarine, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Anurag Srivastava said on Thursday.
Myanmar was trying to get submarines for training.
A few days later, the Chief of the Indian Army, MM Naravan, and the Foreign Secretary, Harshvardhan Sringla, visited Myanmar. During the visit, India agreed to supply artillery weapons, tanks, bulletproof vests and other military equipment to the Myanmar Army.
Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) is in charge of modernizing the submarine at Vizag.
India has already obtained the necessary permission from Russia to deliver the Kilo-class submarine to Myanmar. The submarine will be indigenously equipped for training by the Myanmar Navy.
