India announces ban on onion exports
India has stopped exporting onions to Bangladesh due to supply shortages due to heavy rains and floods. C&F agent Shankar Das gave the information citing Healy customs officials.

Shankar Das said that due to recent rains and floods in various states in India, onion production has been halted in the areas where it was grown. Due to which the supply of onion is reduced and the price of onion is increasing in the Indian market. The Indian government informed Healy Customs around 12 noon on Monday (September 14) to stop the increase in onion prices. According to him, the customs authorities have informed them that all kinds of onion exports will stop from Monday until new orders. An official notification on the matter has not yet been issued, but it will be issued soon, he said. At the same time, no onion will be exported against LCs that are open for import of onions and the bidding process has been completed.

Saiful Islam, an onion importer in the Healy land port, said: “Some time ago we were informed by Indian exporters and C&F agents that India would not export onions. The Government of India has also banned customs from exporting onions and has also told us that we do not export onions. Due to their decision, many of our importers have opened LC to import large quantities of onions. Now we are in metabolism. We tell them to export the onions from the LC that we have open. Unlike many of our LCs, many trucks are standing on the road with goods. Now if they don’t give onions, then we are concerned about what will happen to these onions. This is our loss, who will I ask for compensation? Therefore, a decision needs to be made at the government-level meeting very soon.
