With the use of high-quality seeds and encouragement from growers, arrangements will be made to rapidly increase onion production and store four to five lakh metric tons of onions in cold rooms.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi made the remarks in response to a question from journalists in the conference room of the Ministry of Commerce at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday (January 3). This time the Secretary of Commerce. Zafar Uddin was present.

Tipu Munshi said: “The government will make a decision on the importation of onions only after protecting the interests of the country’s consumers and producers. Onions that were previously LC are now entering the country. The current import price for these is approximately Rs 39 per kg. A quick decision will be made on new imports. The onion produced in the country will hit the market in full force next March.

Responding to a question, the Trade Minister said: “No rogue trader will be able to seize the opportunity. Strict measures are being taken against them. Dependence on importing onions will no longer exist. Currently, there is a shortage from 8 to 9 lakh metric tons of onions in the country. The government has undertaken extensive activities for self-sufficiency in onion production. Onion production is increasing in the country. The country is expected to become self-sufficient in onion production in the next few three years The government is aware of onions.

The Minister of Commerce said that the market price of potatoes has dropped. TCB, under the Ministry of Commerce, has sold potatoes at affordable prices due to the increase in potato prices on the market. The price of potatoes is normal now. Edible oil prices have risen on the international market. It is a product dependent on imports. That is why it has had a temporary effect in Bangladesh. However, the government is aware that no one can dishonestly increase the price of goods. Rice stocks are a bit low at the moment. That is why the government has decided to import rice. The importation of rice has already started. The government will import the required rice to ensure the required stock. If necessary, the private sector will also have the opportunity to import rice.
