The Indian Defense Ministry approved the purchase of new weapons and military equipment from the United States for members of the military stationed on the China-Pakistan border. A meeting chaired by Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh approved the purchase of various weapons and military equipment, an official from the Indian defense ministry said. Of this, 70 million rupees will be spent to purchase 72,000 Sig Saw assault rifles for front-line members of the Indian army.
For the past several years, the Indian Army has been implementing weapons modernization programs. By virtue of this, a large number of light machine guns, battle carbines and assault rifles have already been purchased. And with that, the same old weapons have been replaced.
In October 2016, the Indian Army started the process of purchasing some 700,000 rifles, 44,000 light machine guns (LMGs) and some 44,600 carbines. The Indian government says it has taken steps to modernize weapons by analyzing the situation on the Pakistan-China border.
In addition to lethal weapons, the Indian Ministry of Defense also approved the purchase of high-tech radio equipment at a cost of Rs 540 million to maintain communication on the battlefield. With the help of HF radio equipment, wireless communication between Army personnel deployed to the battlefield and the Air Force will be easier.
India is buying these weapons and military equipment at a time when it is paralyzed with the Chinese military in eastern Ladakh.
