The indefinite strike by shipping workers is starting across the country starting at 12:01 pm on Monday (October 19) to demand 11 points, including salary and benefits. Eight organizations of the Bangladesh Maritime Transport Workers’ Federation have called the strike.

The vice chairman of the Chittagong District Naval Rights Protection Unit Council confirmed the matter to reporters. Nabi Alam.

He said the strike was called on October 13 in front of the Labor Department in the capital Vijayanagar of the human chain of the Unity Council for the Protection of Naval Rights. Earlier, the Shipping Workers Federation announced an indefinite strike across the country.

The 11-point demand of the workers’ federation is:
1. To stop extortion and theft on all vessels and waterways, including the bulkhead
2. According to the gazette announced in 2016, pay the salaries of workers at all levels of the ship
3. Provision of a landing pass and food allowance by the owner to workers heading to India
4. Determination of maritime and night assignments for all maritime transport workers
5. Endorsement, responsible, rescheduling of technical assignment
. Compensation of Tk 10 lakh for workers killed in workplace accidents
. Issuance of letter of appointment, identity card and service book by the owner to each naval worker
. Protect the navigability of the river and install necessary beacons, beacons and beacons
9. Master driver exam, certificate distribution and renewal, stopping illegal boating
10. Stop all kinds of irregularities and harassment of workers in the Shipping Department and
11. Guarantee the social security of ship workers.

Earlier on Saturday, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) held a meeting to cancel the strike and its demands. The president of the company, Commodore Golam Sadek, chaired by the Director General of the Department of Maritime Transport, Commodore Abu Jafar. Jalal Uddin and union leaders participated. Ship owners were invited to the meeting but did not attend.
