The importation of onions has started again from Myanmar. After being closed for nearly two and a half months, 45 metric tons of onions arrived at the Teknaf land port on Friday (September 18) and today (Saturday September 19) in two days.

Teknaf land port administrator Mohammad Jasim Uddin confirmed the matter. He said that the importation of goods from Myanmar was stopped at the end of June due to the discovery of corona at the port of Maungdaw-Akiab. In this situation, after about two and a half months, about 30 metric tons of onions arrived on Friday in two ships. Another ship docked at the port on Saturday, where there will also be an estimated 15 metric tons of onions.

Jasim Uddin further said that documents for imported onions have not yet been submitted as there are public holidays on Fridays and Saturdays. However, the onions will be shipped to different areas after unloading at the end of due process.

After the ban on onion imports from India, the country’s importers have so far obtained approval or IP to import onions from six countries. The countries are China, Turkey, Egypt, the Netherlands, Myanmar, and Pakistan. It will take 14 days to arrive from China; It will take 15-16 days to arrive from Turkey, Egypt and Pakistan. It will take 18 days to arrive from Holland.

Onion imports from Myanmar are known to have started after the high-level meeting. Efforts are being made to unload these onions and get to market as soon as possible.

According to the Teknaf Customs Department, 21,560 metric tons of onions were imported from Myanmar last November through the Teknaf land port. Also, 20,843 metric tons of onion arrived in October, 64 metric tons in August, and the last gathering in July was 83 metric tons.
