Mohammad Shahed, aka Shahed Karim, President of the Regent Group and Hospital, has been sentenced to life in prison by a court in a weapons case. The Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions judge, KM Imrul Kayesh, delivered the verdict on Monday.

The first verdict came in the weapons case, one of the cases brought against Shahed, who was arrested on various charges, including forgery and fraud in the coronavirus test.

Shahed, the president of Regent Group, used to appear among VVIPs at regular major events, covering the news of various cases of fraud and deception starting from the MLM business. He participated in television talk shows. He also wanted to be “important” by taking numerous selfies on Facebook with important people, including influencers from the ruling party.

Following the arrest of law enforcement officers on charges of embezzling millions of rupees through fraud and forgery in the name of medical treatment during the coronavirus epidemic, various accusations began to surface against Saheed. There are more than 60 cases against him across the country. Most of them are accused of fraud.

The charge sheet in the July 30 gun case was filed in court. Charges were brought against Saheed in late August. The court rendered the verdict after an eight-day hearing in September. He was sentenced to life imprisonment under section 19 a) and seven years imprisonment under section f) of the Weapons Act. The verdict also mentioned that the two sentences will be executed together.

He also asked to take the next step after verifying ownership of the vehicle from which the weapon was recovered.

Following the verdict, the court said: “Shahed bought the car with a loan of Tk 20 lakh, but refused to go to court.” He even gave false information to the court despite knowing everything. She’s a very smart and cunning person. ‘

The court further said: “You cannot obtain mercy from the court as it has been proven that you had a gun in your car. We have many people in our society like Saheed, the verdict in this case will serve as an example.

Earlier, the police drove Shahed to court from jail in a prison van at 12:30 pm yesterday. They kept him in the court jail in a jacket and bulletproof helmet. He was then presented in court at 1:57 pm. The judge began reading the verdict at 2 pm. At 2:08 am, the judge announced the final verdict.

After the verdict, Abdullah Abu, Public Prosecutor (PP) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Court, told reporters at the court premises that the court had sentenced Shahed to life imprisonment. The state is satisfied with this verdict. Also, this verdict showed that no matter how influential you are, you have to be subject to the law, no one is above the law.

Said the defendant’s lawyer. Moniruzzaman told Kaler Kantha: “Defendant Shahed has been deprived of justice. Before, we feared that we would not get justice due to the speedy trial. That was proven by the verdict. He said they would appeal against the verdict in higher court.

With the increase in coronavirus infection in the country, the issue of fraud at Regent Hospital came to the fore in early July. Regent Hospital and the Regent Group headquarters in Uttara were sealed on July 6 on various charges, including false reports of coronavirus tests after a raid by police. Then Shahed fled. Regent Hospital was one of the hospitals contracted by the Department of Health to treat Corona patients, but that hospital was accused of giving false reports to patients without testing the samples. Later it was learned that the hospital was not licensed.

On July 15, the RAB arrested Shahed in the Satkhira border area. He tried to flee to India by boat after wearing a burqa, the RAB said. Then on July 19, the DB police went to Uttara with him. Weapons and drugs were recovered from Shahid’s vehicle. A case was filed against him at the Uttara West Police Station.

The RAB also said that Shahed took money from many people through fraud. A hotline was opened to provide information against him.

The court filed charges against Saheed on August 28 in a weapons case. The court set September 10 for testimony. After that, the continuous testimony continued until September 15. After hearing arguments on September 20, the court set September 26 for the verdict.
