Police arrested two people, including a member of Union Parishad, in two cases of torture of a housewife in Begumganj Upazila of Eklashpur Union of Noakhali and spread the video on social media.
The two detainees are Moazzem Hossain alias Sohag, 42, a member of Eklashpur Union Parishad (UP) and Saju, 21, the fifth defendant in the case. They were arrested in the Ekhlachpur area of upazila on Monday night. Five people were arrested in two cases under the Housewives’ Torture and Pornography Control Act.
Begumganj Police Officer in Charge (CO) Harun Aur Rashid Chowdhury said UP member Moazzem Hossain alias Sohag from Eklashpur and Saju from a separate location were arrested in a night raid. However, Sohag is not charged in the case.
Previously, the police arrested him in two cases. Rahim and Rahmat Ullah were detained for six days for questioning. Judge Mashfiqul Haque of the Noakhali Superior Court of Judicial Magistrates (Amli Court-3) granted pretrial detention on Monday.
Additionally, RAB-11 members delivered Badal, the number one defendant in the case arrested at Kamrangirchar in Dhaka, to the Begumganj Police Station last night. Badal, Saju and Sohag will be brought to court today, police said.
The female victim (38) has mentioned in the case brief that the video of torturing the housewife by stripping her was disseminated on Facebook social networks for not agreeing with the immoral proposal in the Eklashpur union of Begumganj. The woman filed two cases with the Begumganj Police Station on Sunday, 32 days after the incident. One case was filed under the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act and the other under the Pornography Control Act. Nine people have been charged in both cases. These are- Badal, Md. Rahim, Abul Kalam, Israfil Hossain, Saju, Samsuddin Sumon, Abdur Rob, Arif and Rahmat Ullah. They all live in Begumganj. They are all members of the Delwar Bahini in Eklashpur. Delwar’s name is not on the case. However, seven or eight unidentified people have been charged in the two cases.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Delwar Hossain, 28, the head of Delwar Bahini in the incident. According to his confession, Badal (22), the main defendant in the case, was also arrested.
The battalion commander, Lt. Col. Khandaker Saiful Alam, told a press conference at the RAB-11 headquarters in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, on Monday afternoon:. Later, according to his confession, the RAB arrested Badal overnight from the Kamrangirchar area of Dhaka.
According to a text message sent by the RAB in the evening, seven fresh cocktails and two 12-gauge cartridges were recovered from the main defendant Delwar’s fish farm.
Meanwhile, after the incident it was brought to the attention of the Superior Court of Justice yesterday. A virtual bank of Mojibur Rahman Mia and Judge Mohiuddin Shamim ordered the removal of video images of the incident on social media. The chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) was ordered to remove the footage by leaving a copy on a CD or flash drive. In addition, the Noakhali Police Superintendent (SP) has been ordered to provide all kinds of security to the woman’s family.
At the same time, the court has appointed a committee to investigate whether the police were negligent in taking the victim’s statement about the incident. The committee, headed by the Noakhali Additional Deputy Commissioner, includes a district social services official and the principal of Chaumuhani Government SA College. They have been asked to submit a report to the Clerk of Superior Court within 15 business days of the investigation of the incident.
In addition, the Officer-in-Charge (CO) of the Begumganj Police Station was instructed to appear in court on October 28 indicating the most recent status of the criminal case. The High Court wanted to know why the rule would not order the CO of the Begumganj Police Station and the officers of the Begumganj Police Station to take appropriate legal and departmental measures for negligence in the protection of women and to take swift action against the evildoers.
The Interior Minister, Noakhali Deputy Commissioner and Begumganj Upazila Nirbahi (UN) officer have been asked to respond to the rule in the next two weeks.
