The bodies of seven people, including a bride, have been recovered after a trawler carrying the bride and groom sank in the Meghna River in Hatia upazila of Noakhali. Many are still missing.
The accident took place on the Meghna River west of Chanandi Ghat in the Chandandi Union of upazila around 3:30 pm Tuesday. At that time there were between 70 and 75 passengers on the trawler.
Mourning flows on the banks of the Meghna in this incident. Police and the Coast Guard are working to rescue the missing. However, boyfriend Sharif Hossain was rescued alive.

Daughter of Ibrahim (girlfriend) Taslima Begum (21), Afrin Akhter Lamia (2) daughter of Akbar Hossain from Badarpur village of Noakhali Sadar upazila, Lily Akhter (6) daughter of Alamgir from the same village and Asma Begum (19 ) daughter of Akhter Hossain, Nasirpur Kaladur Bazar of Hosne Ara Begum Rupa, 5, daughter of Fayez Ullah from the area, Rahena Begum, 30, wife of Alauddin from Hatiyar East village Azim Nagar and Nur Jahan, 65, wife of Khorshed Alam from the same village.
The Hatia Police Officer in Charge (OC) said. Abul Khair said that Sharif Hossain from Kalatli village in Monpura upazila of Bhola went to East Azim Nagar village of Hatiyar Chanandi union to get married this afternoon. After the wedding and eating and drinking, they left Chandandi Ghat for Kalatali village around 3pm.
Citing boyfriend Sharif Hossain and his uncle, OC Abul Khair further said that there were between 60 and 65 men and women, including children, on the trawler. The trawler was heading towards Monpura in Bhola, about three kilometers west of Chanandi Ghat, when it capsized in the Meghna River in the Tankirkhal-Ghasiyarchar area around 3:30 pm. Three children and four women died. Upon receiving the news, the Ramgati police and the Hatia and Laxmipur naval police arrived at the scene and rescued seven people dead and between 40 and 45 people alive. Among them is boyfriend Sharif Hossain. However, many swam to the river’s edge.

Noakhali Police Superintendent. Alamgir Hossain said: “The bodies of seven people have been recovered in the sinking of the trawler carrying the bride and groom. The bodies of five of them were recovered from Tankir Bazar Ghat and the bodies of two others were recovered from Shantipur Ghat. The police are working to rescue the missing.
