A priest was shot dead in front of a church in the French city of Lyon. He was reportedly shot twice at close range across the chest on Saturday afternoon. A suspect has been arrested in the incident.

Nicolas Kakavelaki, a 52-year-old Greek Orthodox priest, was shot and killed with a shotgun, international media reported. His condition is critical.

The attacker fled immediately after the shooting. However, the León prosecutor said that a suspect had been arrested based on eyewitness accounts.

Prosecutor Nicholas Jacqueline said a man who was in line with the testimony of preliminary witnesses had been taken into police custody.

However, he said no weapons were found in the man’s possession at the time of his arrest. Furthermore, neither party has yet confirmed the cause of the attack.

At this stage, no ideas are being exploited or taking sides, Jacqueline said.

Eyewitnesses and police officers on patrol heard shots, the León prosecutor’s office said in a statement. Then he saw a man fleeing there and saw someone shot at the back door of the church.

Prosecutors said an investigation into the incident was launched. It is also reported that the French National Antiterrorist Prosecutor’s Office is in permanent contact with this matter.

Three people were killed in a church in the French city of Nice on Thursday, just two days before Saturday’s attack. Previously, a school teacher was beheaded earlier this month. He showed the controversial caricature of the Prophet (s) in the classroom.
