A senior British cabinet member said on Sunday that Prime Minister Boris Johnson had reimposed a nationwide lockdown to tackle Britain’s second wave of the Corona epidemic.
The Reuters news agency reported that the lockdown will continue in England from November 4 to December 2. Right now people cannot leave home without a specific reason.
The UK has the highest death toll from the corona epidemic in Europe. Now, with the start of the second wave of infections, more than 20,000 patients are diagnosed daily in the country. Experts have warned that the death toll could rise to more than 60,000 if the situation worsens.
“We need to act now,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said at a news conference with the state’s chief medical officer, Chris Woight, and senior expert advisor Patrick Valens. If we are not active, there may be thousands of deaths a day in this country.
The government will no longer be able to house patients in hospitals for a few weeks if the situation continues, despite the lower number of infections in the southwest of England.
He added that starting Thursday, parks, restaurants, gyms and stores that sell non-essential products will be closed for four weeks.
Opposition leader Kay Starrmer said the government could have better implemented the lockdown when schools closed mid-term last month. The government has missed a golden opportunity.
Another 21,915 coronavirus patients were diagnosed in the UK on Saturday. With these, the total number of identified patients in the country stands at 10 lakh 11 thousand 60 people.
