Unidentified villains shot dead an imam named Hafeez Azim Uddin (50) on his way home from Esha prayers in Gafargaon of Mymensingh. The incident took place at 8:15 pm on Saturday (September 19) in the Sadua village of the Niguari union, below the Pagla police station, in upazila. Upon receiving the news, the Pagla OC Shahinuzzaman Khan Police Station went to the scene with the accompanying force to retrieve the body. The motive for the murder was not immediately known.

According to local sources, Hafeez Azim Uddin, son of the late Marjat Ali from the village of Beldia in the Niguari union of the Pagla police station of the upazila, has been the imam of the Suruj Ali Jame mosque adjacent to the government primary school of Sadua in Sadua village of the same union for about 10 years.

After Esha prayers on Saturday at around 8:15 pm, while crossing the bamboo sack of the Sadua canal on the Sadua-Beldia highway, unidentified criminals ambushed each other.

The criminals fled when the locals came forward after hearing the call from Hafeez Azim Uddin. The group of criminals stabbed him in the head, abdomen and hands and seriously wounded him. He died shortly after due to a hemorrhage. Later, the locals informed the Pagla police about the incident.

Pagla Police Station OC Shahinuzzaman Khan said: “We have recovered the body from the scene after receiving the news.” Of course, legal action will be taken in this regard.
