Only legally manufactured or imported games will remain in operation

If all goes well, mobile SIMs will not be introduced into any illegal phones after next April. SIM can be introduced only with equipment imported and legally produced in the country. Even if someone has bought an illegal phone in the last year, it will be closed. The SIMs registered in the National Equipment Identity Registry (NEIR) of the BTRC regulatory body will be introduced. Valid kits will be registered with NEIR before they go on the market. When a customer is going to buy a mobile phone, they can send the phone’s IMEI number to the specified number via free SMS to find out whether it is valid or invalid.

BTRC is purchasing equipment at a cost of Tk 30 crore for a technical solution to stop illegal phones. Equipment was also ordered last Thursday. Synesis IT Limited got the job. They will have to reach an agreement before December 2. The entire system must be put into service within 120 days after the contract. The last time they work is in April. Meanwhile, they have to launch the technology.

BTRC Deputy Director Zakir Hossain Khan said they were working to stop illegal phones as soon as possible. Once the equipment arrives, there will be no more illegal phones on the market. Nobody can turn it on even if you buy it.

It is known that BTRC took the initiative to stop the first illegal mobile phone in 2012. However, for various reasons, it has not been implemented so far. This year, the plan is being implemented through the call for tenders and the selection of a company. The BTRC says the NEIR system is being introduced to prevent counterfeit phones, illegal imports, theft and loss of income. In this way, the IMEI of the phone launched on the mobile network will be matched with the set of databases legally imported and produced in the country. Illegal, stolen, or counterfeit appliances cannot be turned on. This will reduce the tendency to steal mobile devices.

Zakaria Shahid, MD of Symphony, secretary general of the Association of Mobile Phone Importers, said: “We have been demanding this for a long time. We’ve even done the initial NEIR work on behalf of our organization. Now, if it is introduced there will be three types of benefits. First, customers should not be tricked into buying fake or invalid sets. Second, the government will get 100% of the revenue from the whole sold. And third, the job of enforcing the law will be easier. You don’t have to worry a lot to find a person. You will get the right person at number one. In addition, the tendency to steal mobile phones will decrease.

According to estimates by national and imported mobile phone companies, an average of 36 million devices are sold each year. 30 percent is a smartphone. That’s like a crore. From 20 to 25 percent of the phones sold enter the country illegally or through contraband. Excluding the number of contraband games, the market for legally sold games is around Tk 15,000 crore. As a result, the government is deprived of a large amount of revenue due to illegal sets. The amount is approximately 5 billion rupees. Furthermore, customers are also being misled into buying illegal or fake sets. Phone theft is also a big problem.

Mezbah Uddin, Deputy Secretary General of the Mobile Phone Importers Association and Marketing Director of Agent Fair Electronics of Samsung Bangladesh, said that both customers and those doing business legally face various difficulties due to illegal handsets. It will benefit the government, consumers, law enforcement, and legitimate merchants. The huge government revenue will also increase.

According to BTRC and mobile operator sources, there are many mobile devices on the country’s network that are fake. There are also phones brought into the country illegally. BTRC officials say the TV will not turn on on the network purchased before August 2019. However, no final decision has been made on the issue of illegal phones purchased after August. In this case, you may be given the opportunity to register.

How to know if the set is valid or not: The method to verify the validity of the mobile phone is to go to the message option, write KYD and enter the IMEI number of 15 digits with space and send it to 16002. In the response message you will you will know if it is valid or invalid. The IMEI number is on the mobile phone package. Apart from this, the IMEI number can be found by dialing * # 08 #.

What will happen to the sets brought from abroad: BTRC has reported that even if NERI is presented, people will be able to bring the sets when they come from abroad. However, it must be registered. BTRC will arrange the registration. This arrangement will be available at the airport. In addition, you can also register with BTRC by showing valid purchase documents. According to BTRC’s preliminary decision, a person can import a maximum of two phones per year. If you bring more than that, you will have to pay taxes.
