The government has set the price of vegetables at different stages due to the instability of the potato market.
The Agricultural Marketing Department has written to the Deputy Commissioners across the country to ensure that the potato price is set at 23 Tk per kg in cold stores, 25 Tk wholesale and 30 Tk retail.
At the same time, a letter has been sent to the CDs asking them to take the necessary measures of strict monitoring and surveillance so that all three parties, including cold rooms, wholesalers and consumer-level retailers, sell potatoes at the prices mentioned.
According to a letter sent by the Department of Agricultural Marketing, Bangladesh has produced about 1.9 million metric tons of potatoes in the last potato season. The total demand for potatoes in the country is approximately 7.9 million metric tons. It shows that there is a surplus of approximately 31.91 million metric tons of potatoes from the total potatoes produced last year. Although a certain amount of potato is exported, there is no danger of a shortage.
According to the Department of Agricultural Marketing, the cost of producing one kg of potato per farmer this season is Tk 8.32. And during the potato season, when potatoes were stored in cold rooms, the maximum price was 14 rupees per kg. Cold storage costs Rs 3.38 per kg, collection cost is Rs 0.48 and weight loss is Rs 0.8, capital interest and other expenses are Rs 2. In other words, the total storage cost from production to other cost up to one kg of potato cold storage is Rs 21.
In this case, the price of the refrigerated potatoes has been set at 23 Tk with a dividend of 2 to 5 percent on the sale price at the cold storage level, 4 to 5 percent wholesale and 10 to 15 percent retail. The profit of the potato conservator is two rupees per kg.
On the other hand, 6 paisa are spent on storage, rental and labor costs. In that case, the wholesale price falls to 23.6 tak. With this, the gain has been fixed at Tk.25. And at the consumer level, the company has set it at Rs 30. But at the retail level, potatoes are currently sold at Rs 50 per kg, which is not reasonable. In no way is that acceptable. Therefore, at the cold storage level, the price of potatoes has been set at 23 Tk per kg, wholesale at 25 Tk and retail or consumer at 30 Tk.
Meanwhile, a letter sent by the Bangladesh Cold Storage Association to cold storage owners across the country on September 11 said that despite the market demand, farmers, traders and traders are not releasing potatoes in hopes of making more profit. Potatoes are supplied slowly from cold rooms in some areas. In this context, it was suggested to remove the required supply of potatoes from the cold room for market price control and for the convenience of consumers.
Also, the Bangladesh Cold Storage Association has warned cold storage owners not to create an artificial crisis by storing vegetables.
