The huge ancient idol of Vishnu in the house of Brajendranath Saha in the village of Deora in Akkelpur upazila of Joypurhat has been delivered to the Vihara Buddhist Museum in Paharpur. The statue was recovered by members of Camp RAB-5 Joypurhat in collaboration with the Department of Archeology at 3.30pm on Sunday. A press release sent from Joypurhat Radhab Camp at 9.30pm on Sunday said the idol was recovered.
In a press release, RAB claimed that Vishnu’s rescued idol was made of Kasti stone. The statue weighs 360 kg. The statue dates from 995 to 1043 AD during the reign of Mahipala, the first king of the Pala dynasty. It was recovered from the Deora village area of Akkelpur upazila. The value of the statue is 75 crore rupees. The statue was delivered to the Paharpur Buddhist Monastery Museum on Monday afternoon.
The village of Deora is located about 15 km south of Akkelpur upazila. There was a stone idol of Vishnu in the courtyard of Brajendranath Saha’s house in Deora village. The statue was found many years ago next to a temple in the town. Bajendranath Saha kept the idol in his home, claiming that it was found in ancient sources.
A letter was sent to Brajendranath Saha from the Bogra Regional Office of the Archeology Department asking him to deliver the statue to the Paharpur Buddhist Monastery Museum. A copy of the letter was delivered to Akkelpur Upazila Nirbahi (UN) officer SM Habibul Hasan. The local administration sent letters to those interested to provide the necessary assistance to rescue the statue. The statue was later recovered by RAB. The statue had been stolen twice before.
Brajendranath Saha said that the idol of Vishnu is made of cement. They came to the side of the temple a long time ago. The idol has been with them since the time of their ancestors. The statue was stolen a long time ago. The statue was then placed in the courtyard of his house with a cement mold.
Akkelpur Upazila UNO SM Habibul Hasan said: “Me and Nahid Sultana, director of the Bogra regional office of the Department of Archeology, recently visited the village of Deora. The idol was in the house of Brajendranath Saha in that village. The statue is a state asset. Then Brajendranath Saha was asked to deliver the idol to the Paharpur Museum. Brajendranath Saha did not surrender. Then the RAB went and rescued the idol. He said that Radhab had given the idol to the museum of the Buddhist monastery in Paharpur.
Fazlul Karim, custodian of the Vihara Buddhist Museum in Paharpur, said the idol was at Brajendranath Saha’s home in Deora village. It was recovered by the RAB and the idol was delivered to the Paharpur Buddhist Monastery Museum.
