Masum pleaded not guilty during the remand hearing for Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, accused in a case of gang raping a housewife while her husband was detained in the traditional dormitory of Murarichand College (MC) in Sylhet. He stated in court that he was not involved in the incident even though he was present at the scene.
Wednesday (September 30) at noon, Metropolitan Chief Magistrate of Sylhet. The defendant in the rape case, Masum himself, said this while giving his statement in court, as there was no lawyer for the defendant during the hearing of his request for pre-trial detention in the Abul Kashem court.
Additional PP said during the hearing. Mahfuzur Rahman said, claiming his innocence, Masum told the court: ‘I went to MC’s bedroom on a motorcycle after receiving the news on my mobile. However, I am not involved in the rape incident.
The government prosecutor said the court detained Masum when he began to defend himself. After completing the pre-trial detention request hearing, he was granted a five-day pre-trial detention.
Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner (indictment) Amulya Kumar Chowdhury said Shahparan OC Police Station (investigation) Indranil Bhattacharya, the investigating officer in the gang rape case, detained the accused Mahfuzur Rahman Masum for seven days to be interrogated. The court granted a preventive detention of five days.
In this sensational case, the police dispatched seven of the eight defendants arrested by Sylhet Range Police and RAB-9 in five days over five days. Previously, six defendants arrested in two phases on Monday and Tuesday were placed on remand.
By the way, a housewife was gang-raped while out for a walk with her husband at MC College on the night of Friday, September 25. At around 8:30 pm, BCL leaders and activists forcibly took her husband’s housewife and gang-raped her in a private car in front of the bedroom. At that time, two people detained her husband in front of the university.
The victim’s husband has filed a case at the Shahparan Police Station. Three unidentified people, including six BCL leaders and activists, were charged in the case. The accused BCL activists are said to be supporters of Ranjit Sarkar, former secretary for sports and youth affairs for the Awami League of Sylhet district.
The victim testified before Sylhet Third Metropolitan Court Judge Sharmin Khanam Nilar on Sunday afternoon. At this time he gave a detailed description of the incident. The court recorded the young housewife’s statement and handed it over to the family.
